All That Glitters Are Sequins

Brazilian label Osklen have gone back to their roots for SS10, taking inspiration from the costumes of the riotous Rio carnival.

With oversized sequins and shimmering tees making more of a statement than sparkly pasties ever could (well, almost!).

H&M Line Gets Festive

H&M‘s annual Fashion Against AIDS effort’s collection consists of around 20 pieces for women, 12 for men and some 20 accessories ranging from headphones to sleeping bags and a logo tote. The items will go on sale on May 20 at 200 selected H&M stores and a quarter of sales will be donated to youth HIV/AIDS awareness projects.

The advertising campaign, shot by Dan Mårtensen, shows Lizzie Jagger and Lou Doillon hanging out in a festival setting with male model Josh Beech, who moonlights as lead singer of British rock band Snish.

The women’s outfits include fringed tunics, cut-off denim shorts and tops embellished with sequins or ethnic details for a bohemian vibe. The look is completed with gladiator sandals and chunky jewelry. The men’s collection focuses on slim blazers and battered denim shorts, faded shirts and a leather biker jacket.

If that tent and sleeping back does not tempt you to want to attend a music festival then only the good Lord knows what will.

Gap Launches Another New Pant Style

On the heels of last year’s denim reboot, Gap is launching another major pants initiative. The men’s and women’s Premium Pant collection, shown Tuesday at Milk Studios in New York and in stores in August, is inspired by “the big part of life that is work,” as Gap executive vice president of design Patrick Robinson put it.

With its customers’ denim needs firmly addressed and their trust restored in the label’s fits, Robinson and his team went to work crafting a collection of sophisticated, polished styles suited to “high-stakes events,” i.e., dates or professional settings.

Neiman Marcus Tests Discount Concept

Neiman Marcus is testing a discount retail concept for aspirational shoppers who fled the luxury chain when the financial crisis hit in 2008.

The 11,000-square-foot test store, part of the retail company’s Last Call clearance division, opened April 2 at Inwood Village, a popular outdoor shopping complex next to the wealthy University Park section of Dallas. It presents brand-name fashion and accessories, including Michael Kors, Badgley Mischka and Diane von Furstenberg, in an environment that looks like a hybrid of a boutique and an outlet. The emphasis is on contemporary apparel, handbags and shoes, and most prices fall between $45 and $300.

The sign out front reads “Last Call,” but the store will be renamed with a new brand soon, said Ginger Reeder, a Neiman’s vice president and spokeswoman.

An off-price Web site is planned for the fall — moments like this make us say thank you recession!

Let’s Go With YSL to the Met

For the last few seasons, Yves Saint Laurent and the Metropolitan Opera have enjoyed a nice, symbiotic relationship. YSL gives the Opera a new, young audience; the Opera gives YSL another layer of cultural cache.

On Monday night, the French design house sponsored the gala premiere for the third time (they’re committed to one more).

Vogue India Dispels Dark Skin Stigma With Beach Babes

Vogue India’s April cover featuring five darker skinned models is meant to tackle the stigma surrounding darker skin color in the country, Vogue UK reports. Gia Johnson, Nethra Raghuraman, Tinu Verghis, Ashika Pratt and Esha Gupta posed in bikinis for the “Dawn Of Dusk” spread.

The editorial reads:
“Every generation has its share of beauty myths. Perhaps it is time to bust this one. Time to say that as a magazine we love, and always have loved, the gorgeous colour of Indian skin…dark, dusky, bronze, golden–whatever you call it, we love it.”
